Treatment of the Eyes

One of the fascinating aspects of Myofascial Release is that there is so much room for interpretation. Techniques are learned only as starting points for practice. Many years ago, after attending an advanced Myofascial Release seminar, I took the basics of a technique I had learned and modified it, and the results have been excellent.

In my practice, I had been referred a number of children and adolescents with various types of visual difficulties. A common thread among these children was difficulties with reading. While performing a standard test for eye gaze, I was struck by the consistency of the jumps in the child’s tracking. This test is a familiar one to most; you are asked to hold your head still while following a pencil tip across your field of vision. These children all had significant jumps at certain spots in their eye tracking. I then proceeded to gently treat the tissues surrounding the eye, primarily within the eye socket. Treatment invariably resulted in changes in the eye tracking test results, with fewer jumps seen in the eye gaze, or the gaze completely normalized. What was even more exciting were the reports back from parents, stating that their child’s reading had improved. I then expanded the use of this technique to persons suffering from eye headaches or migraines as well as a number of other reported eye difficulties. Gently touching the tissues surrounding the eye often instantly reproduced the pain. Treatment proceeded to reduce or eliminate this pain.

These exciting results have resulted in a great many changes in people’s lives that were not possible using the standard available methods of treatment. Using the principles of Myofascial Release, I learned long ago that the entire body must be evaluated and, at times treated in order to fully balance the patient’s system. Using gentle, non-invasive, and safe techniques to treat the muscles, fascia, and surrounding structures of the eyes creates the potential for major improvements.
